Hand-Tufted vs Machine-Made Rugs: Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Two rugs. Same colour, same size, almost the same photo on the website. One is 4,000 rupees. The other is 18,000. So what’s going on?

We hear this question at the showroom almost every week. The answer is simpler than most people expect. Nearly all of that price gap comes down to one thing, which is how the rug was actually made. Once you get that, picking between the two is easy.

The hand-tufted one

This is the slow way to make a rug. It’s also the good way. Someone sits at a frame and punches yarn through a canvas backing by hand, one tuft at a time, following a design drawn onto the cloth. Then the surface gets sheared flat, a backing goes on, and the edges are finished off. A single rug can take days to complete.

Ours are made here in India, usually in New Zealand wool, with a thick 20mm pile and a proper anti-skid backing. Because a person is making it instead of a machine, we can do things a factory never could. Your colour. Your shape. The exact size your room needs. And you can feel it the moment you step on one. It’s dense. It doesn’t go flat after six months.

The machine-made one

Here a power loom does everything. Fast, precise, thousands of identical rugs coming off the line. Usually it’s synthetic yarn like polypropylene, which is exactly why they cost so little and wipe clean so easily.

And honestly, that’s perfectly fine for the right spot. A flat you’re renting and will leave next year. A hallway that gets walked on all day. A kid’s room where something is going to get spilled sooner or later. Spending big in those places makes no sense. What you give up is how long it lasts, the feel of real wool under your feet, and any choice in how it looks.
