What Does “1500 Reeds” Actually Mean on a Persian Carpet?

You’re looking at an Iranian rug and the description says "1500 reeds." It sounds important, and it is, but nobody ever explains it. So here’s the plain version.

Reed count is a measure of how finely a carpet is woven. The higher the number, the tighter and more detailed the weave. A 1500 reed carpet is a genuinely fine piece of work. That’s the whole answer, and the rest of this just explains why it matters for what you pay and what you get.

How reed count works

Think of reeds as the vertical threads running across the width of the loom. More reeds packed into that same width means more knots, smaller knots, and far more detail in the pattern. A low reed count gives you a bolder, chunkier design. A high one lets the weaver draw fine curves, delicate flowers, and sharp detail that a coarser weave simply can’t hold.

People sometimes mix up reeds and knots. Reeds are the threads; knots are tied onto them. More reeds allow more knots, which is why the two go hand in hand when people talk about quality.

Why it changes the price

A finer weave takes far longer to make. More knots means more hours at the loom, more skill, and more material. That’s the real reason a 1500 reed carpet costs more than a 500 reed one of the same size. You’re paying for the labour and the detail, and you’re getting a rug that holds its value and its looks for decades.
